A disgraced detective, a spectral mobster, a city where corruption and crime are as entrenched as jazz and barbecues. Welcome to Pecaminosa, a city near the border between the United States and Mexico where if you don’t get killed by the living… the dead will. From the Azores Islands, in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese Cereal Games invite us to enter a unique universe that combines the setting of Noir cinema with the mechanics and aesthetics of classic Action RPGs. Pecaminosa will come to life on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC in the spring of 2021, under the label of Badland Publishing, and this is its first trailer:
In the words of its own authors, Pecaminosa could be defined as a cross between The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Touch of Evil. This Cereal Games creation displays a beautiful pixel art that pays homage to Noir cinema, in the service of a plot in which there are no pure-hearted heroes or princesses, only criminals, vice and a charming touch of the occult.
In this “Police Action RPG” we will embody John Souza, a former policeman who receives, in the middle of a hangover, the visit of an old acquaintance: Charlie “Two Angels”. Have we mentioned that Charlie is dead? Well, he is: the ghost of this mafia boss will appear to us, accompanied by a couple of his thugs, but not to teach us the value of good actions, rather with a less altruistic purpose. Charlie doesn’t want to go to Hell, something he had earned in life, but in order to enter Heaven he needs to redeem himself, and for that he needs John to capture his former partners.
Faced with the most insane case of his eventful, and ethylic, career as a private detective, John will have to do what he knows best: tour the city, interrogate all the scum in town, and walk around with his fists and his old gun when things get ugly. And they will. In what way. In a city called Pecaminosa, we can expect everything but smiles and kind words.
Through Pecaminosa’s L.I.F.E. system, the player will personalize the evolution of the anti-hero, distributing the experience points he gains in four different parameters: Luck, Intelligence, Force and Endurance. In addition, two perks can be permanently unlocked, which will depend on the L.I.F.E. attributes that we have enhanced. And of course, it will be possible to customize all our clothing and arsenal. Because it’s not the same visiting a police station or the city’s brothel as entering a warehouse full of trigger-happy gangsters.
Throughout the different chapters in which the plot of Pecaminosa is unraveled we will find fascinating characters, we will make money thanks to Black Jack, we will beat up, we will collect debts for others and we will liquidate a lot of criminals. All this is accompanied by a Noir cinema atmosphere, enhanced by an enveloping soundtrack of pure jazz, composed by Cristovão Ferreira (Nordela Studio), who was inspired by the soundtracks of some film gems of the 50’s, such as Les Liaison Dangereuses (Art Blakey), Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (Miles Davis) and Touch of Evil (Henry Mancini).
Pecaminosa will arrive at PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC in the spring of 2021, from Cereal Games and Badland Publishing. Crime, illegal gambling, alcohol and pacts with dead mobsters – who wouldn’t want to get into something like that?
