Sniper Elite, much more than a simple shooter.
Sniper Elite is a saga created by British Studio Rebellion 2005. Its journey began with Sniper Elite for PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox. What defines this series is that it’s a highly tactical shooter. In other words, you can’t just walk in and start shooting like crazy. You have to follow a small strategic plan if you want to advance and succeed throughout the missions. When it looked like all shooter were going to be the same, Sniper Elite changed the game forever. It focused on giving the player more than ” just shots” and making him think like a real sniper.
World War II in the spotlight
The new title, Sniper Elite V2, arrived in 2012 for PS3, X360, PC and Wii U (one year later). Following directly in the footsteps of its predecessor, we put ourselves back in the shoes of a sniper during the Battle of Berlin at the end of World War II. And we enter the heart of Nazi Germany to eliminate all the scientists involved in the German V2 program. Sniper Elite V2 maintains the characteristics of the first title, but adds the Kill Cam, in which we could see clearly the internal physical damage we caused to the enemy if the shot was 100% accurate.
In this first installment we put ourselves in the shoes of an American sniper who has to risk his neck in the streets of Berlin to fight the communist forces. Sniper Elite conquered the fans of this genre and provided them with an adventure in which strategy was the norm and you had to break a sweat to complete certain missions. Five years later, the same game would arrive for Wii, taking advantage of the features of the Nintendo console to regain the success and fame it had achieved years earlier.
Snipers around the world
It took two years to see a new delivery of the series. Sniper Elite III reaches modern consoles in 2014. Here we are again in the Second World War in the shoes of a sniper. However, this time we will travel to Africa to end the plans of the Third Reich. Once again, stealth and precision will be our best allies in accomplishing this mission.
And the last instalment from Rebellion arrived two years ago for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Sniper Elite 4 places us at the same time as its predecessors, although in a different part of the globe. As usual, we’re back to be an expert sniper, but now, moreover, we’re an undercover agent in conjunction with the Italian Resistance to defeat the fascism that led that era of terror.
However, we have not only enjoyed a single narrative in this franchise. At the same time that it was being developed, another “timeline” called Sniper Elite Nazi Zombie was created. This sub-saga placed us in the same universe in which the main plot is set, but with a rather peculiar addition: Nazi zombies. These instalments had all the features of the main one, but had the perfect incentive for terror lovers.
Currently the studio has confirmed that we will have a new Sniper Elite main line instalment, as well as new remasterings and adaptations for consoles. In other words, we’re going to have Sniper Elite for a long time. Fans appreciate this, because even if it doesn’t seem like it, it’s a saga that has gathered a great army of fans whose only objective is to eliminate the leaders of terror.
The closest release of one of these new compilations is Zombie Army Trilogy for PS4, Xbox One and PC, next month. So you know, put on your best clothes and clean your sights, because you have to go back to the battlefield.
